When to Visit the Emergency Room

Some emergencies require more than an orthodontist’s attention. It helps to know when to rely on the emergency room instead. For instance, the ER should be your priority if you are bleeding from the head or mouth after a sports injury or accident, as you may have a concussion or need stitches. 

It’s also possible to swallow an appliance or lose a bracket. If you or your child experiences heavy coughing or breathing, the appliance may have been breathed into the lungs. In this case, head to the ER as quickly as possible.

Orthodontic emergencies involve your braces or other appliances more directly. While some pain and discomfort are common with these treatments, read on to learn how to tell if your issue requires an emergency visit to your orthodontist.

When to Visit Your Orthodontist

Orthodontic treatments can cause soreness or discomfort. In some cases, an OTC painkiller or ice pack can help reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain, without needing to see your orthodontist immediately. 

However, you may also experience intense pain that requires an emergency visit to your orthodontist. How do you tell the difference? Make an immediate appointment with your orthodontist if you experience:

• Intense pain that can’t be relieved with painkillers and ice
• Broken braces or appliances that cause severe pain
• A wire stabbing your cheek or gums in a way that can’t be easily fixed at home

Schedule a prompt appointment with your orthodontist if you experience any of these situations. The longer you wait to receive care, the more difficult and painful your issues may become.
