You are probably looking forward to the day you get your braces off, so you can show off your new bright smile.  You have invested time, money and effort to create that new smile, so it is important to take the right steps to ensure there are no stains, or yellow or white spots once you unveil your teeth.

Here are 5 tips to help prevent stained teeth with dental braces:

1. Brush After Each Meal.

To properly clean braces and teeth and to prevent plaque build-up, it is important to brush teeth thoroughly after every meal. Use a regular fluoridated toothpaste instead of whitening toothpaste, which may cause white spots.  Wait half an hour after eating before you brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush to allow saliva to wash away acids from food that adheres to your tooth enamel.

2. Floss Every Day.

As part of your regular oral hygiene routine, you should floss each day to remove food particles and plaque from your teeth and braces. You should use floss threaders or special brace-friendly products recommended by your orthodontist to help you effectively floss your teeth.  Use mouthwash to give you extra protection against tooth decay and gum disease.

3. Do Not Whiten Teeth While Wearing Braces.

Even though it may seem like a good idea to whiten your teeth with braces, since your teeth are covered with brackets, the whitening substance including bleach and whitening toothpaste, will not be able to reach underneath your brackets. The results will be a two-toned look to your teeth once your braces are removed, rather than a bright smile. Even if you have Invisalign, you may have this same result.

4. Avoid Foods That Stain Teeth.

While you are wearing braces, avoid foods and drinks that will cause your teeth to stain. Certain foods like coffee, red wine, sodas, and foods with colorful sauces such as tomato-based sauces, barbeque sauce, mustard or curry are primary culprits.  If you do consume these foods make sure to brush your teeth afterwards to avoid stains.

5. Regularly Visit your Orthodontist.

To keep your teeth and gums healthy and clean, make sure to get an oral exam and professional cleanings at least twice a year.  You may need to go more often so that your orthodontist may thoroughly clean your teeth and help you maintain proper care of your braces and teeth.
