It has been fully documented and extensively communicated that smoking has serious consequences. It increases the risk of oral cancer and gum disease and causes increased dental plaque. Smoking damages the body’s immune system, leads to extensive cancers and increases the risk of heart disease.

Since the advent of e-cigarettes, vaping has become a rapidly growing phenomenon, hailed by manufacturers as a “healthy alternative” to smoking. However, it is clear–vaping is not healthy at all!

The Mechanics of Vaping

Vaping is simply inhaling the heated vapors of an e-cigarette. Each e-cigarette is powered by a battery and is filled with a juice that is heated until it produces an aerosol or vapor. The e-juice is a mixture of elements including water, propylene glycol, glycerin and flavorings. The vapor may appear harmless, but it usually contains nicotine as well as ultra-fine particles of toxic chemicals and even heavy metals.

The Damaging Oral Impact of Vaping and E-Cigarettes

Data shows that vaping impacts lung health, damages blood vessels, increases the risk of heart disease and decreases the health of the immune system.

Nicotine in vaping products contributes to cancerous growths including lung cancer, breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer and pancreatic cancer.

In the mouth, nicotine reduces blood flow which can cause the death of gum tissue and gum disease, plus tooth sensitivity and increased risk of cavities. Nicotine reduces mouth saliva which leads to a dry mouth, plaque build-up, increased bacteria and tooth decay. Nicotine acts as a muscle stimulant that can cause teeth grinding or tooth clenching, leading to tooth damage or jaw problems. Further, vaping with nicotine causes tooth staining.

Inhaling the heated vapor into one’s mouth introduces bacteria from the flavoring, leading to increased incidence of cavities and tooth decay, along with a build-up of plaque.

The propylene glycol in e-cigarettes also causes dry mouth, which contributes to tooth decay. In addition, the chemicals used can cause sensitivity, gum inflammation, gum disease and receding gums.

Notes for Braces Wearers

  • Avoid harmful foods
